Esther’s Friends was founded on the power of connection, comfort, and friendship. Inspired by the joy Esther brought to everyone she met, we wanted to provide that same sense of comfort to children facing long-term hospitalizations.
Through a partnership with Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy, Esther’s Friends welcomed Eva, a therapy dog named in honor of Esther Viola Frey. Eva’s name, Dogwood’s Viola d’Amore, reflects Esther’s memory, and she shares Esther’s birthday on March 20—a meaningful reminder of the connection between them.
Eva brings comfort where it matters most
Hospital stays can be difficult and isolating for children and families. A therapy dog visit can bring a moment of joy, calm, and connection during an uncertain time.
Eva visits children throughout Chicagoland, bringing smiles, companionship, and a little bit of Esther’s friendship to every room she enters.
Eva's journey
Eva has grown into an incredible therapy dog, bringing comfort not only to hospitalized children, but also to many others throughout the community. Her work has included visits with children, students, first responders, and individuals with special needs.
Her favorite visits, though, are the ones in hospitals—where she can sit with children, share a little joy, and remind them they are not alone.
An Ambassador for Esther's Friends
Esther loved meeting new people and making friends wherever she went. Eva continues that legacy by creating new moments of connection for children and families throughout Chicagoland.
Every visit is a reminder that friendship can bring comfort, even during the most difficult times.
